Substitute Teacher Qualifications
Substitute qualifications vary from state to state. Be sure to check the qualifications below to be certain you meet the criteria.

Colorado
- Requires a valid substitute authorization (1-year, 3-year, or 5-year), or
- A valid State of Colorado teaching license
Georgia
- Requires a high school diploma
- Recommends a minimum of 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher
Indiana
- Requires a minimum of 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) and a completed application for a substitute permit, or
- A valid State of Indiana Teacher Certification
Louisiana
- Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must demonstrate a minimum of a 10th grade proficiency in reading and math on a standardized achievement test. This requirement will be waived for holders of an Associate or Baccalaureate Degree.
- Recommends a minimum of 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher
Michigan
- Requires a valid State of Michigan teaching certification or a “90 day letter” from recent graduate’s university, or
- A valid, paid sub permit within 30 days of hire, and
- A minimum of 90 credit hours (135 quarter hours) from a single four-year institution and a minimum GPA of 2.5
New York
- Requires a valid teaching certificate or must be pursuing a teaching certification to sub any length of time in any area, or
- Individuals who are not certified or pursuing teaching certification may sub for a maximum of 40 days a school year
North Carolina
- Requires a high school diploma
- Recommends a minimum of 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher
Ohio
- Requires a valid teaching certificate, or
- A valid substitute license (short-term sub license can sub 5 consecutive days), or
- A valid long-term sub license
Wisconsin
- Requires a valid State of Wisconsin teaching license, or
- 5-year substitute license, or
- 3-year substitute permit, or
- 1-year substitute permit
